Devices in the mobile environment have special features compared to the desktop environment. The physical restrictions and the nature of usage include characteristics, which have to be taken into notice when developing applications for these devices. These characteristics are:
Differentiation between devices, including size, which impacts on screen size limitations and input
Power usage
Memory restrictions
Mobility
Occasional network connections
Continuous usage
Limited input facilities (device keyboard)
The characteristics result in robustness requirement on the platform and the applications. The devices are used for long periods of time without being switched off. Memory management and power consumption are important issues, as well as handling sudden situations, where network connection might be lost or an incoming call interrupts the application running.
