Understanding collections

A collection is a group of related objects. You will find it easier to manage a large number of items as a collection. For example, collections of points and lines might be managed by components in a diagram editor or CAD program. A set of views for a document can be placed in a collection. Files within a directory can be managed as a collection. Disk directories themselves can be placed in collections. In fact the CommonPoint file system is structured as a collection of collections, where some elements are directories and others are files. Collections act as flexible alternatives to traditional data structures of computer science such as arrays, lists, and trees.
