Stationery

Stationery is the means by which users create new documents and other interface objects. Users create new versions of interface objects from stationery pads (templates). This model for creating documents and objects provides users with a tangible, consistent metaphor for creation.

Users will benefit from stationery because they can tailor template documents to match specific tasks. When users create stationery pads from these documents, the stationery preserves the data structure and layout. Stationery saves the properties users define for the document as a whole and its components. Each time a new document is created from stationery, it has the same presentation and organization as the original document.

The concept of stationery lets developers distribute predefined functionality such as pre-addressed electronic mail, automatic routing forms, and more. Entire product lines of stationery can be defined for specific uses--each providing the functionality needed for a given task.
