CommonPoint information set
The CommonPoint information includes developer guides, tools and usage guidelines, documented sample programs, and application documentation. This information set is available in print and online.
Getting started
Taligent recommends beginning an exploration of the CommonPoint application system with these books:
- Introduction to the CommonPoint Application System - Describes the Taligent programming model; introduces the CommonPoint application system architecture; lists programming tasks, and the tools and frameworks used to complete these tasks; and explains where to find supporting information in the CommonPoint information set.
- Programming with the Presentation Framework: Tutorial - Designed for developers who understand CommonPoint framework architecture and usage. This book provides a step-by-step walkthrough of building a simple document-based program for the CommonPoint application system. Developers who prefer to acquire a more comprehensive view of the system before they experiment with code can review the developer guides before using this tutorial.
Developer guides
The CommonPoint developer guides include the following:
- Desktop Frameworks Concepts - Describes frameworks used to build document-centered programs for the CommonPoint application system, including the Presentation framework, document frameworks, and the user-interface frameworks.
- GrafEdit - Describes the GrafEdit framework and how to use it to write graphical editing programs.
- Text, Native Language Support, and Time Media - Describes frameworks used to incorporate text and time-based media in CommonPoint programs.
- 2-D and 3-D Graphics - Describes the design, architecture, and use of the 2-D and 3-D CommonPoint graphics classes.
- Distributed Computing - Describes frameworks and services used to distribute applications across multiple computers, and includes information on SQL Data Access Services, the Caucus framework, remote object services, and the Licensing framework.
- Foundation Services - Describes services that most developers need to develop applications, including services used to manage identifiers, collections, streams, pointers, and floating-point numerics.
- OS Services - Describes services that provide an interface to operations usually handled by an operating system, such as task and thread control, heap management, system shutdown, communication between threads, file access, and timing services.
- Quality and Performance Guide - Describes frameworks and subsystems used to test applications, handle exceptions, and measure performance of applications.
Usage and tools guidelines
- Human Interface Guidelines - Describes the user interface elements and behavior in the CommonPoint application system.
- Taligent's Guide to Designing Programs - Provides guidelines, with examples, for designing effective programs in C++ for the CommonPoint system. Contains information that should prove helpful in understanding the programming conventions used for the CommonPoint application system. Note: this book is available online, printed books are available through the Addison-Wesley Publishing Company.
- Taligent Tools for AIX - Describes the development tools used to create, build, and debug CommonPoint application system programs.
- SNiFF+` Guide - Provides a step-by-step introduction to the SNiFF+ open development environment.
- Look!` User's Guide - Describes how to use Look! for visualizing and debugging C++ applications. (Note: this book is available in print only.)
Application documentation
- CSpace User Guide - Describes how to use CSpace, an online document that enables collaborative work between CommonPoint systems.
Documented sample programs and
sample code
Sample applications, snippets, and selected source code are used throughout the documentation set and can be located in the Taligent examples directory. Documented samples and usage guidelines are described in the following:
- Documented Samples - Provides sample applications and describes how they were designed and coded.
- Creating a Basic Application - Provides an online guided exploration of the Desktop frameworks. It contains guidelines and examples for implementing the fundamental parts of a basic document-centered CommonPoint program. (Note: this book is currently available online only.)
Installation and
late-breaking
information
- Installation and Release Notes - Explains how to install the CommonPoint application system, and provides updated licensing information and late-breaking information about this software release.
