Key features of the Licensing Service
The Licensing Service provides the following features:
- Control over granularity. The developer can determine the scope of the licensed product code accessible to the user. The developer accomplishes this by using a specific type of license activation key, according to the requirements of the individual product. At the coarse end of the scale, an entire application can be licensed as a single entity; at the fine end, the scope can be specified as a single member function within a single class. In most cases, the scope falls between these extremes.
- Proactive means of licensing. The product developer is no longer restricted to using passive, externally-applied licensing with hard-wired licensing policies. The Licensing Service enables a product developer to design the interface to the Licensing framework and incorporate it directly into the licensed product. This capability allows developers to address licensing issues for their products by using the underlying framework provided by the CommonPoint application system.
- Provider independence. Licensing does not require using the proprietary API of a specific provider, but rather allows the product developer to select a set of providers to be used.
