What licensing does

Each time a licensed software product is executed, the product is responsible for requesting the Licensing framework to check for a valid license for that product. If the check fails, the product is assumed to be running in violation of its license agreement. Such a violation would generally prohibit the use of the product; however, the developer can choose to allow the product to execute but can, for example, disable critical functions such as save and restore.

The Licensing framework check looks for an entry for the product (called a license activation key) in one of the following:

A product making this type of check is called a licensed product. A dedicated server administering a database of license activation keys is called a licensing server.
