Using a license activation key

Each license activation key has many attributes, which include: an encryption code, the product identifier and product version activated by the key, and the number of licensing units authorized by the key. To simplify bulk purchases of product activation rights, a single key can authorize multiple uses of a product. Each use of the product requires a set number of units (often one) to be acquired from the holder of the keys, typically a licensing server. The licensing server decrements the number of available units until the product releases them back to the licensing server.

A licensing failure occurs if the product tries to acquire units and none are currently available; however, this is not considered a licensing violation, because a valid license activation key is present and the units will eventually become available.
