Types of specification

Selections can specify a subset of data using ranges. For example, the text model selection specifies a portion of the data in a text model by using a text range. The text selection only needs to keep the positions for the first character and the last character. It does not keep a copy of the actual text.

For discrete data such as object graphics, you can specify the selection as a collection of object references or IDs.
