• Enabled and Disabled. A control is enabled if it is responsive to user input. A disabled control typically ignores user input. Typically you enable and disable controls programmatically. Figure 34 shows an enabled and a disabled push button control.

• pressed and unpressed. While the user interacts with a control, the control is pressed if the next release of the mouse button will have any side effect. Some controls that respond to every mouse movement don't have a special pressed look (for example, the line slider). Most controls allow a user to cancel an interaction by dragging the mouse outside of the control. Some controls have a slightly more complicated cancelling mechanism. For example, to cancel a drag interaction on a line slider the user must drag the mouse pointer at least 100 points away from the exterior edge of the slider. Also, to cancel a menu tear off interaction, the user must drag the mouse back into the menu that is being torn off. Figure 35 shows the pressed and unpressed looks of a push button control.
