Basic and Standard GrafEdit
You can develop applications using GrafEdit through two different approaches. If you want to build applications using the functionality already provided by the Desktop frameworks, you can use Standard GrafEdit. Standard GrafEdit assumes that program data is stored in a model. A model is a Compound Document framework construct for storing data. You need to write less code with this approach, but it provides less flexibility. Basic GrafEdit does not use a model to store the data. You can use it to develop applications in which you create your own representation for storing data. Developing an application with Basic GrafEdit requires more code, but allows more flexibility. The more GrafEdit does for you, the less flexibility you have and the less code you must write yourself.
