Appliances

Appliances are special objects that perform self-contained, automated operations on data. Appliances provide a convenient representation of peripheral devices, such as telephones and printers, and can automate routine operations and data transformations. Appliance objects provide a convenient, direct-manipulation interface for delegating routine operations.

To use an appliance, the user simply drags data to it, initiating the operation of the appliance. For example, to print a document, the user drags the document icon or proxy to the printer appliance.

References to appliances can be distributed to other users. For example, to make a printer available to other users, a user might distribute a business card that contains a reference to the printer. The tangible representation of an appliance also allows users to easily modify its behavior.
