Components

Documents are built from individual components. A component is a self-contained functional unit, roughly equivalent to an application and its data.

A component may choose to embed other components as part of its own data. It does not need to know anything special about these embedded components. In fact, all components have the potential to be embedded inside other components.

In the CommonPoint application system, new components are typically created using a stationery pad. (For information on stationery, see Chapter 3.) A component can also be created by using the clipboard to copy and paste, or by forcing a copy while dragging the mouse.

A document represents a root component. A root component is simply a component that is not embedded within any other component. As a consequence, any component has the potential to be a document.

A compound document is a document that contains more than one embedded component.
