Commands: menus and tools

A menu presents a list of choices to the user. Choosing an item from a menu initiates an action. Some menu items execute immediately, while others display a panel or dialog box that asks for additional information from the user. Read this chapter to learn about CommonPoint's approach to menus.

NOTE In this chapter, menu items that are not implemented in the current release are identified by italics.

Menus provide a way to execute commands through indirect manipulation. While users can often execute the same commands through direct manipulation or by using the keyboard, not all commands are available using each method. For example, Cut and Paste are not the exact equivalent of dragging to move an object; the former uses the clipboard, while the latter does not.

Menus facilitate learning by providing a way for the user to browse the available commands. Clearly defined menu categories can help the user remember where to find a certain command.
