Character representation

At the lowest level, all text data in the CommonPoint application system consists of sequences of Unicode characters. The section "Unicode character encoding" in this chapter describes the CommonPoint implementation of the Unicode character encoding standard, including:

The CommonPoint application system also includes a transcoding facility, which you use to convert text data to and from other character encoding systems--for example, the encoding systems used on the Macintosh or on MS-DOS systems. The CommonPoint application system provides transcoders for the ASCII character encoding system, for UTF7 and UTF8 character data, and for Macintosh character data in a number of scripts. You can build your own transcoders if you need to transcode text data from another encoding system. The transcoding facility is described in "Transcoding character data" on page 25.

For information on creating, storing, and manipulating character strings, see Chapter 3, "Basic text classes."
