Understanding record sources

Most current database connectivity APIs emphasize data retrieval at the field or item level. The Record Source framework, a framework within the SQLDAS framework, represents a higher level abstraction more suited to the needs of CommonPoint applications. A record source is a streaming analog of a standard database table that can be used directly by the client application to handle the data returned from a SQL query. Because a record source captures all the essential semantic constraints of relational data in a simple, extensible form, it imposes minimal performance penalties while giving the client application the flexibility needed for tasks such as query post-processing and bulk uploading and downloading. Chapter 4 discusses records and record sources in more detail.
